I have been a Dungeon Master for two years and have played D&D for the same amount of time, having created hundreds of NPCs with strong connections to the world and the player characters. The backstories I have written have a strong emphasis on internal, emotional drive, making them easy to import into any setting, but I also pay attention to external factors, inserting unique details from campaign settings such as the Forgotten Realms, Eberron, and Wildemount in order to make a player character come to life while being grounded in their world.
